Peer Support Skills

MHI has managed peer support programs for over 20 years. Our training draws on years of experience in overseeing formal peer support programs in a variety of settings and now we are making it available to other organizations. This is the training we provide our own peer supporters and it complies with the knowledge matrix defined by Peer Support Canada's Standards of Practice.

Upon completion of the curriculum, you will be able to:
  • Define mental wellness and identify factors that contribute to stress injury and illness
  • Explain the value of peer support
  • Explain the peer support philosophy of hope, empowerment, and self-determination
  • Recognize the role, responsibilities, and limits of a peer supporter
  • Demonstrate personal behaviours that indicate hope, wellness, self-awareness, confidence, and resiliency
  • Develop a personal plan for maintaining self-care and resiliency
  • Demonstrate interpersonal behaviours that engender trust, display empathy and support change
  • Demonstrate the ability to set and negotiate boundaries
  • Distinguish when it is appropriate to share personal information and what is appropriate content to share
  • Explain the importance of protecting confidentiality and identify strategies for doing so in a peer support context
